Though his parents had immigrated to Japan for his father to open up his own private dental practice with the plans to pass on the business to their children, Sangbae and Jaebum envisioned a different future altogether. From a young age his older brother had expressed an interest in music, one that as Sangbae got older hadn't died down. Naturally, as little brothers do, Sangbae wanted to be in on everything his older brother was - and though not all of Jaebum's interests were his cup of tea, music was one thing they could both sincerely agree upon.

To his father's dismay, by the age of six, Sangbae already had greater interest in instruments than dental hygiene. At his mother's urging his father gave in however, allowing him to attend a piano class along with Jaebum, rather than tag along with him to work after school. He was only six, his mother had argued, there was still more than enough time for new interests to develop. And after two years, they did.

Classical music wasn't really his thing, developing a different taste by age eight. Louder music with more uplifting beats, rather than that played in the background of tea parties. Still, eight years was young, his dad holding out hope for him to finally sway. Since there were no longer piano classes in the way his father's insistence to come to work after school and observe only grew. Both boys caved (not that they had much choice) spending their evenings with their father, observing when they were called, otherwise finishing up homework in the lobby. Though they obliged, their interests still never wavered.

Despite his interests being discouraged by his father, his mother was always there to encourage them both in whatever it was they decided they wanted to achieve. As soon as Sangbae began high school and his elective courses were filled with as many music related classes that he could possibly fill his schedule with. Even though both children were freely able to choose which classes they wanted to add to those that were mandatory, their father's insistence never let up. More and more of their free time throughout high school was taken up by their father. His brother, being the older one was lucky, able to leave home after graduating to continue on with university.

Luckily enough, Jaebum hadn't moved too far and Sangbae took full advantage of the proximity. His mother clued in to his complaints of missing his brother soon enough, usually siding with him when his father wanted to keep him at the clinic after school. Though he still accompanied his father, his mother made sure to convince his father that somedays were to spent with his brother after school as well.

And so it went on, Sangbae alternating his weekday evenings between his father and brother, until he was able to move out as well. Graduating high school meant much more freedom and a chance to finally defy his father's wishes completely. As a parent he could only go so far as to encourage what career path his sons could go in - to his dismay, neither ever took to the profession he wished, and with both away from home and too old to demand, the dream had to be let go.

Since Sangbae had basically taken to living part time with his brother, the sensible thing was to move in with him. With half of his clothes already there, it wasn't too much of a hassle, moved in and settled over a weekend alone. The first year went by quickly, uneventful for the most part as his attention was split up between working and studying. It wasn't until he turned nineteen that things got a bit more interesting. The mundane days of school and work were made a little more exciting by the presence of one of his brother's friends. Barom was someone he'd already met in high school, a friend his brother had kept in touch with. Though they had lost touch for a bit as both tried to settle into lives away from home, Barom's reappearance meant daily visits. With both his brother and Barom having a similar interest in getting into music one day, the two boys were inseparable.

Despite the three year age difference, Sangbae got along with him just fine as well. Even if he was his elder brother's friend, Sangbae was able to call him his own friend eventually, bonding on days when Barom made his way over too early, his brother stuck at work for an hour or two more than expected. What became friendship eventually became more, Barom making time before he was to meet Jaebum for short dates with Sangbae.

It seemed like Sangbae wasn't made to please his father, choosing a career path outside of dentistry....a romantic interest in men. At the very least the latter was one that he could keep under wraps to avoid any further disappointment - but eventually, most things come to light.

It was on an evening that he was set to have dinner with his parents at home, Barom generously offering a ride. What Sangbae didn't expect was for his dad to spot both in the car outside and witnessing a kiss goodbye that turned into something of a make out session instead.

Confrontation was saved for the next day, something Sangbae could never have seen coming when his father suggested the night before that they visit Lake Akan.

The last image Sangbae would have of his father is one that would bring about nightmares for years after, furrowed brows and narrowed eyes, features twisted into an expression of anger and disgust as hands held against his head to keep him underwater until he ceased struggling.

What he remembers coming next is a wet, muddled memory. Somehow he managed to make it home, consciousness foggy enough to have him finding his way to his parent's home, rather than the one shared with his brother. However, what he'd come to find after much of his mother's fussing an hours of sleep later was that his father's wrath would no longer be a worry.

News stories had already broken out of his father's suicide after admitting to kill his own son, the headlines bringing back the memories of what had happened that day, ones Sangbae would have been fine with forgetting entirely.

Though he recovered well enough, there was a lack of motivation and energy that plagued him for weeks after. The symptoms were ones doctors credited to the traumatic experience. However, when Sangbae finally found it in himself to return to the lake, the symptoms mostly subsided. It didn't dawn on him at first that his "death" had been a sort of rebirth, one that required him to be close enough to the place where he'd found his new life to be at 100% - at least not at first. Eventually, in an attempt to see if such an impossible theory could possibly be true, he brought along some of the lake home with him, water and algae. Interestingly enough it worked, spurring on the idea for a method to keep the lake with him always.

The surprises didn't end there, however. New abilities and drawbacks coming to light slowly enough. Somehow his mother accepted them easily enough, even when she found a crane in the place of her son. She'd managed to hear enough to know such things were possible. The knowledge enough to have her moving her family away from Japan and back to Korea. It'd be a fresh start in a place that wouldn't link Sangbae to the headlines his father's actions had inspired.

Soon enough his brother followed as well, Sangbae and him getting their own apartment while their mother moved in with their grandmother. Eventually even Barom followed, their relationship continuing just as it had been. Something open and fun, nothing too serious, at least not until he'd completely settled, Sangbae had decided.

Eventually, things settled nicely. With Sangbae's interest in music, finding a job as a DJ was more than he could hope for. What he hadn't expected to come from the job was finding a person he could finally settle down with.

Taehyun was just one more person in the crowd until he was attempting to hide behind speakers much too small to offer any coverage at all. Small talk had turned into an invitation to spend the night together, but expectations turned into something else entirely.

When Sangbae had agreed to a night with Taehyun he had expected just one, a simple one night stand with a guy he'd never see again. But just a few days after their first night spent together came an offer for a date. A night at the movies spawned the realization that maybe Taehyun was someone he enjoyed spending time with, someone worth more than a simple one night stand. The end of October was always full of Halloween party invites, one of which Sangbae had accepted, but given how he'd spent his night on his phone anticipating the next text message from Taehyun, he might as well have rejected the invitation.

As the months went on, further cliches developed. Nights spent alone were spent missing Taehyun, until eventually Sangbae did what he never thought he'd do. Agreeing to being someone's boyfriend was something he'd always convinced himself he'd never do, however, Taehyun had never been factored in to that decision. Soon enough confessions of like becoming love were exchanged. After such confessions it made more sense to spend more time together than apart, prompting Sangbae to move once again, this time with someone he planned to stay with for good. His choice was further cemented when, in another cliche, Taehyun proposed on Valentine's Day.

From there, the only way was up. Taehyun seemed to bring luck the longer he stuck around and once they were wed on October 28th, there was no doubt he'd be around for good and Sangbae wouldn't have it any other way.

Requite

Nymph; usually a female nature spirit. A nature spirit all the same, though of the opposite gender, Sangbae is bound to Lake Akan back home in Hokkaido, his life force dependent on the location. Straying too far is sure to weaken him which is why he had to work around such a disadvantage and preserve the lake in the form of a pendant that's always on his person. Bound to a lake with the ability to shift into a crane grant him abilities over water and air, along with a few other perks that come with nymph phisology.
